History

The Robin Hood Hotel was built in 1870 by Henry Dickens and was used as a stop on route to Gippsland by the famous Cobb and Co coach company. It was used by tired and weary passengers to rest and have a good meal during their gruelling journey from Melbourne. After a change of horses and some refreshments they would continue on their way, finally reaching their destination of Sale some 22 to 27 hours after boarding the coach in Melbourne.

Luckily it is a much easier and quicker journey these days, taking just under an hour from Melbourne by freeway.

While the Hotel has changed hands many times over its 144 year history, probably the most famous owners were the Snell family from Devon, England. They owned the Hotel twice, the first time being 1895, and then again in 1907. The family was famous for their size, three of the children being unusually large. Clara Snell at age 25 was an enormous 252.2kg!! She travelled the world with her brother and sister as a circus side show, the very same travelling show as Wild Bill Hickok and Chief Sitting Bull. Clara died in 1914 in the care of her Mother at Nar Nar Goon.

Just last year we received a phone call from a gentleman asking if we would like a copy of a book he had written on the history of the Snell family. He had stumbled upon the pub by accident two years previously (after getting himself quite lost)! He stayed for lunch and became fascinated by the old photos on the wall of the main bar. For the next two years Terence FitzSimons, History Professor at Federation University, Ballarat, spent his spare time researching and writing. He published his book 'Two Fat Ladies and Hercules Tom', and we received a copy within a week of his call. What an entertaining read! We managed to get Terrence to come and talk about his book and sign copies in August 2015. Attendance that day was truly remarkable, not an empty seat to be found. Many Snell family members were present and some truly amazing stories and facts were brought to light in a very pleasant and entertaining day. For more information on the book feel free to contact us. Book Signing Authour Terence FitzSimons signing copies of his book.
